Thank you CF.Objective!

May 22, 2012

I'm unpacked, somewhat decompressed, and semi-recovered. CF.Objective was great! I met a ton of people, learned more than I expected, had some amazing discussions, and even won a raffle prize (a backpack from the Slatwall gang). That was easily one of the better hotel rooms I've ever stayed in (in the past when attending CF.O I stayed with some friends), and the service was great...not to mention that killer gym! I left the conference feeling exhausted from being so busy, incredibly inspired, and excited to put all the new info to good use.

Presentation highlights for me were Scott Stroz's "PhoneGap, Yea It's That Easy" and "Building HTML5 games with PhoneGap, JavaScript and CSS3" by Jason Kadrmas. Scott's preso went over a lot of great intro source code, showing how easy it is to use PhoneGap for a variety of the common tasks mobile developers are asked to deal with and answered several questions I had about the process. Jason's preso was the first I've seen that didn't make HTML5 game programming look like a total hack -- having spent time doing C++ game development, I was happy to see that there are ways to build HTML games that are very similar to the techniques I already know (rather than just hacking the Canvas tag, or doing other strange things that I didn't really want to learn).

Thanks to everyone that attended my "Intro to Model View Controllers" presentation. Being in the last time slot, on the last day of the conference, I was expecting a small turnout (as people had planes to catch, etc). It was a very pleasant surprise to see a nearly full room -- hopefully everyone enjoyed the preso. I'll post the updated version of my slides and code shortly.

Also, thanks to the CF.O staff that made sure this was a great conference. This was my first year as a a speaker, and was quite happy with how everything was handled. If there were any major problems, they were hidden and managed quite nicely; everything seemed to go very smoothly. Having helped run other events in the past, I know that is not an easy feat to accomplish, it's obvious that the CF.Objective team worked incredibly hard.

As is commonplace for me when traveling, I spent a portion of my last day there raiding the local music stores. Now that I've got a fresh batch of new CDs to listen to, I should probably start playing catch-up on all the things that didn't get done last week.

I'll also be posting the notes I took in the other sessions, as soon as I have a chance to clean up the typos and such.

Until next year...
