VMware network voodoo.

December 29, 2007

The weirdest thing happened on my Dev box tonight. I've been on the various web forums for hours now, and tried everything I can think of. Given that it's nearly 2am and I have to catch a flight in 2 hours, I'm going to fire a "hail mary", blog my dilemma here, and maybe someone will have a solution by the time I return to my computer. First, here's how things are set up: Host OS: Ubuntu 7.10, running VMWare Server 1.04. The Guest OS is Win XP Pro, which is where I have my development environment set up -- CF8, Apache, Dreamweaver 8, etc. Earlier today I was in Dreamweaver, FTPing a build up to my server. To move everything up takes several minutes, so I typically start the "put" command, then flip over to my other computer to check email, etc, while the FTPing takes place. After a few minutes, I flipped back to check on it and noticed Dreamweaver had stopped xfering the files, and was now on a "trying to connect to site" dialog that wasn't moving (after clicking the 'details' link, it seems that Dreamweaver had tried SEVENTEEN times to re-connect with no dice). I cancelled the FTP, and did some testing...for some reason, that VM's network connection just died. It's gone. Poof. No internet, no ftp, no resolving DNS, gone. Here's the voodoo parts... 1. I have 2 Guest VMs running Win XP Pro (one is the "original" Dev environment and the second is this "new Dev environment" that's giving me all the trouble). The "original" one can connect just fine in Dreamweaver. It's network connection appears to be just fine. 2. I have tried EVERYthing I can think of -- mirroring the network settings in "original dev" environment, trying to renew IPs, flipping from "bridge connection" to "NAT" in VMWare, you name it. No dice. This "new Dev environment" just WON'T connect to a network any more. 3. The ONLY differences between the 2 guest OS images are as follows: * Original Environment was created on a Win XP Host OS, then copied over to this box. Whereas the new one was created from scratch on Ubuntu. * There is more hard disk space in the New Dev Environment. * ...otherwise they should be identical VMs. I'm stumped. If anyone's seen this before, your insight would be greatly appreciated. -nolan
