CF Summit East 2024 Recap

Last week was the 2024 edition of CF Summit East in Washington DC. Formerly called the Adobe Government Summit, CF Summit East has changed venues a couple of times. This year it was at the Carahsoft building which worked quite well. Wifi was stable, food was good, plenty of power strips in the rooms. As a speaker I prefer when the hotel is also the conference venue so I can prep in my room before giving a talk, but aside from that I have no notes. Carahsoft and Adobe ran a really solid event.

Sometimes called the “Government Summit”, this is the east coast ColdFusion conference, making it an easier option for the east coast CFML developers that can’t always make it to Vegas -- with content unique to this DC event.

MVC With and Without a Framework

So you've looked at CF Components, and kind of understand the basics of how they work. Everyone says "frameworks are the way to go", but there's still a big knowledge gap between those 2 points. As each framework has its own terminology, how do you know where verbiage for one begins and the other one ends? Is "Controller" a Model-Glue specific thing? What about a "Service Layer" or a "View"? There's very little documentation available about the "Model-View-Controller" pattern for ColdFusion, that's not specific to a CF framework...and that's often what causes the confusion for people newer to OO development. In this talk we will go over a basic application that's built using the Model-View-Controller design pattern, but does not use any specific framework to get there. We'll also show when using the MVC pattern by itself may be enough for your app, when going to a full fledged framework may be the better way go to, and how easy it is to do so. For maximum benefit, you should have an understanding of how the CFComponent tag works, and we'll take it from there.

How to set the Release Date on Masa CMS content en masse with the Feed API

A little while ago we had a Mura site (which has recently been upgraded to Masa) with a bunch of blog articles and other content where the "Release Date" field was left empty by accident. Obviously this is not a great idea. Having a release date helps with sorting and filtering data, not to mention it has SEO benefits.

A few weeks ago was the annual ColdFusion Summit in Las Vegas. And as expected, the event was very worth the trip! Overall I think everything ran very smoothly — food, sessions, staff, the party, and all the other things you'd expect at CF Summit were the same quality as previous years.
